Professor Luigi Nibali

Professor Nibali is a UK-registered Specialist in Periodontics and the Director of the Postgraduate Periodontology Program at King’s College London, UK. He also leads the Centre for Host-Microbiome Interactions, where his research explores how genetics and the oral microbiome contribute to periodontal disease. After earning his MSc and PhD at UCL’s Eastman Dental Institute with a doctoral focus on the genetics of aggressive periodontitis, he continued his academic career at Queen Mary University of London before joining King’s in 2019. His research team has developed the concepts of "infectogenomics" and "genetic dysbiosis," shedding light on the interaction between microbial triggers and host response.

Prof Nibali has published extensively in periodontal and medical journals and authored two textbooks on periodontal therapy and dysbiosis. His contributions to the field have earned him prestigious awards such as the Fish Prize from the British Society of Periodontology and the Socransky Award from the International Association for Dental Research. He serves on the Editorial Boards of the Journal of Dental Research and the Journal of Clinical Periodontology. Clinically, he focuses on the management of complex periodontal cases, including deep intrabony defects and advanced furcation involvement. He is known for his evidence-based approach and dedication to high-quality, minimally invasive care.
